Breaking the Rules, or Toyko I Love You.

Late last year I went to lunch with my friend Liz in Rolla. Before lunch we stopped at the lys, Uniquely Yours, I fell in love. I fell in love with Toyko by Feza, a very fussy and difficult yarn to knit with. But you know how love is you always overlook the flaws. So with my credit card in hand I bought four balls and decided on a drop stitch patterned shawl.

My friend was a complete enabler. "Buy it," she encouraged. "Once you are done you can wear it to my lecture in March," she suggested. In my mind's eye, I saw myself all fashionable swathed in a gorgeous scarf that everyone admired and coveted.

Flash forward to last Saturday while I frantically knitted and than cut the tedious strands of fringe. Three balls knitted into another one of my amazingly long productions of a shawl. I know after the super-sized clapotis I promised to control my urge to knit bigger and longer, but you know I had the yarn and the drive to make this baby big. Add a fourth ball of yarn for fringe and low and behold another large shawl was born.

On Tuesday my lovely wife and I went to said lecture and I was swathed in fabulousness. My friend loved it, other women clucked and crooned over the shawl. I fluttered around like some over-sized rock diva and only got the fussy loose knitted thing caught on one bathroom door and stepped on the fringe once. A smashing success, if I do say myself.
And not to be all about me, Liz's lecture was well attended and her presentation enthusiastically received. At the end she was the real rock star and I one of her glittering satellites.

Catching Up, Again!

First I want to thank everyone for all the cards and warm thoughts over the last weeks, they were a comfort and I love you guys. Second I want to thank everyone for the wonderful birthday wishes and presents. I got everything from yarn from Chicago to honey from Louisiana. In other words awesome stuff from awesome people.
My friends at Rivendell gave me the coolest Double Pointed Needle holder made by the yarn gurus at Lantern Moon. The holder is a large circle with wonderful pockets for the DPNs. The pockets are in graduated in size with little flaps to keep everything snugly inside. But wait the holder is like magic...

It folds up into a cute little pie shape that is all securely held together by a magnetic closure. Genius.

I was also was given much Fiestaware love too. My lovely wife took me to Cornucopia, the place where Fiestaware lives, and let me pick out much new (but not needed) serving pieces. I got two bowls, and two platters in great new colors which remind me of the early 1970s. The bowls is so large I could make enough potato salad to feed an army of knitters at least through knitting an Jamie sized scarf. The platter is 19 1/2 inches wide, like I will cook anything to fit on it, but hey it was in marigold, it had to be mine.

And then because I don't have enough Fiestaware in my life I bought a new flatware set. I am crazy about my Fiestaware Masquerade flatware. The enamel colors on the handles are just so, dare I say it, festive. Can't wait to lay these beauties out. This year may not have been the best birthday, but it was one of the more colorful ones.
